Sad Day for Vodafone Employees

6.52.16pm GMT Tue 18th Mar 2008

"Losing your job is always traumatic, and I have every sympathy for the 450 Vodafone employees who are about to lose theirs", commented David Rendel, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Newbury.

"At a time of economic downturn across the world, they will be worried about job prospects, and who can blame them.

"Ironically the news may help some of our smaller firms, many of whom have been reporting a shortage of skilled staff right across the South East.

"If those who are being made redundant by Vodafone can find jobs in some of these other firms, that may reduce the need to import employees from outside West Berkshire. In turn that could lessen the pressure to build new housing estates around Newbury, Thatcham, Hungerford, Hermitage and all the other parts of West Berkshire which are currently under pressure".
