No Time to Lose to Save Post Offices

7.35.25pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 17th Jun 2008

"West Berkshire Council must be prepared to put its money where its mouth is," says David Rendel, Newbury's Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson.

"Essex County Council have been authorised by the EU to put money into keeping open Post Offices recently closed or threatened with closure. They say this will cost around £30,000 a year for three years per Post Office saved.

"But there is no time to lose. The longer Post Offices remain closed, the harder it will be to bring them back into operation. West Berkshire Council need to get planning immediately, to see just how many of the recent closures can be reversed, and how we can prevent any closures in future.

"The Conservatives on WBC have always claimed that they wanted to save Post Offices. Now we shall see whether they really meant what they said."
