Tue 19th Aug 2008:

West Berkshire Council's Liberal Democrats are angry that the Council has closed its Community Information Centres in Burghfield, Hungerford, Lambourn, Mortimer and Thatcham during the month of August.

"The Theale Police Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG) agreed a few weeks ago that a local dispersal order would not be renewed, believing that CCTV would be installed in Theale within a couple of months" he said. "Now we're told that it won't even be ordered until the end of the year. First we were told that it would be installed by this May, then that it would be ordered by May, now we will be lucky to have it in place by May next year".

Mon 18th Aug 2008:

It is widely forecast in the press that the price of recyclable material, including most forms of plastic, is set to increase dramatically. For example The Times stated on 11 August that "With plastic processing advances in the coming months, yogurt pots, bags, food packaging and any plastic containers will be even more sought after as manufacturers recycle plastic to avoid buying oil". The Liberal Democrats are therefore urging West Berkshire Council to consult with waste contractors Veolia as a matter of urgency with a view to increasing the range of plastics collected for recycling whenever it becomes practicable to do so.

Mon 11th Aug 2008:

The Conservative executive member for Children and Young People was quoted as saying that she was pleased that "the results were at least as good as last year". "This was very misleading" commented Councillor Macro. "The percentage getting the target level 4 in science this year was 88%. Last year it was 91%. Even a primary schoolchild knows that going from 91 to 88 is a decline. To describe the decline in results for mathematics from 80% to 77.5% as 'marginal' is also misleading."

Thu 24th Jul 2008:

Come and enjoy the Northcroft Family Picnic Walk on Saturday 9th August at 2:30pm (meeting in Northcroft leisure centre car park). West Berkshire Council have agreed to organise the event to promote the newly accessible 2-mile circuit from Northcroft Park to Speen Moor and back which will end with a picnic.

Mon 21st Jul 2008:

Liberal Democrat Group Leader Jeff Brooks is urging people who have, or continue to experience problems with their waste collections to come along to tomorrow's meeting of the Council's watchdog, the Overview and Scrutiny Commission. Starting at 6.30pm in the Market Street Council Chamber, the public meeting will give residents a chance to hear from the Executive Member for Waste, the General Manager of Veolia and council officers about the roll out of the new collections.

Fri 18th Jul 2008:

Communities to the south west of Reading have been living in fear ever since a team of Government Planning Inspectors recommended that a development of 7,500 new homes should be permitted in the area, north of the M4. Yesterday's announcement from Government, rejecting this recommendation, was greeted with delight by local Liberal Democrats.

A meeting of West Berkshire Council last night saw a clamp down on planning applications being heard at a higher level than the district's area planning committees. The Council's leading Conservative Group abolished the right of any three Members of a planning committee to call for a decision to be reconsidered by the full council.

The Liberal Democrats on West Berkshire Council are enthusiastically supporting Carers' Week. This shows to the thousands of local residents who care for dependent relatives and friends that Councillors back the work they do. They help family members and friends and also many carers volunteer to help people they would not otherwise know at all.

Mon 19th May 2008:

Demands for immediate improvements to the Herbert Potter House Care Home have been made by Cllr Owen Jeffery (Lib Dem Spokesman for Community Care). He wants WBC to act at once to deal with a Home that has sadly been found wanting in two consecutive inspections by CSCI (the Commission for Social Care Inspection).
